On Monday December the City Council adopted it's budget for 2010. As councillors we faced a very difficult task. Revenues coming into the council have fallen dramatically in the last year.
I was determined that while we acted responsibly as a council and delivered a budget that was workable under the financial constraints forced upon, at the same time key areas needed to be protected. I am delighted to say that the closure of the swimming pools has been prevented, and that the waiver we have in place in relation to the standing charge for bin collection has also been retained.
However I am under no illusion that the council face significant financial challenges in the coming year. Nor am I in any doubt that the cause of the financial mess we find ourselves in can be laid squarely at the door of the governement whose policies have brought us to where we are.
